Throughout the 1980s, PUMA designed customised footwear for motorsports drivers such as Stefan Bellof, eventually leading to the development of the first Speedcat in 1999. Based on an earlier Bellof-specific shoe, this sleek silhouette was optimised for Formula 1 racing, with a lightweight, durable upper, a protective fireproof inner and a thin, grippy sole for excellent pedal control. The PUMA Speedcat was also incredibly stylish, and in 2000, it transitioned to the world of fashion, becoming a popular sneaker off the track.

The Speedcat has a plush all-suede upper with heel and forefoot overlays divided by a classic Formstrip on each flank. Durable yet flexible, its form-fitting design fits snugly around the foot, while its soft inner lining ensures superior comfort.

Complementing the PUMA Speedcat’s low-profile upper is a flat rubber outsole whose tyre-like tread pattern delivers strong traction before extending up the heel in a bold nod to its racing heritage. Comfort is provided by a cushy Ortholite sockliner and a slim IMEVA midsole which is both lightweight and flexible.

Aesthetically, the Speedcat is as sleek and streamlined as its racing car predecessors. Intricately stitched lines are joined by embroidered Cat logos on the lateral toe and heel, with more of the iconic leaping felines beside PUMA text on the tongue and lateral sidewall. Its nostalgic look pays homage to the brand’s historic impact on the motorsports industry, presenting a sporty look without too many technical elements. This makes for a refined, stylistically versatile sneaker that suits everything from casual use to formal occasions. Multiple PUMA Speedcat variants offer a broad selection, with all-leather options alongside the elegant Ballet, the super breathable Go, the dynamic Plus and the boot-like Mid.

While the PUMA Speedcat was popular amongst racing fans in the 2000s, especially after legendary driver Michael Schumacher began wearing it off the track, it wasn’t until the 2024 relaunch that it became such a highly sought-after sneaker. Early in the year, a successful South Korean release in collaboration with fashion label Open YY saw the Speedcat worn by celebrities such as pop star Minzy, rapper Woo Wonjae and model Irene Kim. Appearances at London Fashion Week followed, and in October, PUMA partnered with Danish brand NAKED Copenhagen and stylist Sierra Rena on a Speedcat campaign celebrating empowered female leaders and innovative self-expression. In December, PUMA launched another striking campaign, this time involving superstar singers Dua Lipa and Rosé, both of whom appeared in stylish videos wearing the heritage red and black colourways, respectively.

In the racing world, top drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc represent the Speedcat, and Scuderia Ferrari has collaborated on a collection of designs celebrating the Italian Formula 1 team’s deep-rooted connection to PUMA. Meanwhile, influential celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski have been spotted wearing the Speedcat in the city, showing off its timeless, versatile look.
